Success Report 2004
Jackson Hole Outfitters
email
In keeping with my policy of providing a complete reference list of all hunters who hunt with me each year, listed in these pages is every hunter, along with a brief report on his success. This will enable you to get a feel for how the hunt went and you can call unsuccessful hunters as well as the ones that scored. If you call please be brief to respect their privacy. Names listed are in order of arrival at camp to show that one week is no better than another. Hunter success depends more on weather than anything else, as the last week of hunters will attest. Beginning in 2002 I included pictures as links in this Report rather than having a separate page for pictures.
NOTE: I had four hunters cancel this year because of health issues, some at the last minute, and one went to the good hunting ground in the sky because of cancer.. When you book a hunt with me and I reserve that spot in camp for you, you are obligating yourself for the full amount of the hunt cost whether you show up at camp or not (because you are taking the place of someone who would love to be there and because you are taking the place of someone who would pay full price). For this reason I strongly advise you to purchase trip insurance (you can get details directly from me) and I also strongly advise you to get some info from us on glyconutrients to prevent health problems. According to research MDs these glyconutrients are absolutely essential to cellular health and immune function. They are as essential as vitamin C is in preventing scurvey. Four of the last eight Nobel Prizes for medicine were given for this discovery. It really is a new medical breakthrough! We have had two personal friends cured of cancer by using these glyconutrients and I am convinced my Mother would still be alive had we known about it three years ago. Because it repairs the immune system and deals with proper cellular communication, many ailments such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, fibromyalgia, asthma, arthritis, glaucoma, asthma, macular degeneration, Lou Gehrig's disease, Lupus, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, migraine headache, Downes' Syndrome, Autism, cerebral palsy, ADD, ADHD, and others are relieved, some actually cured. Anyway, please contact us. It may save your hunt and your life. At the very least it will help your overall health and will likely prevent any of the above diseases.
Archery Elk; Three hunters drew permits but a party of two cancelled four days before the hunt because one of the party had a pre-hunt physical checkup and the doctor found a heart condition.
John Sunderbruch, Iowa (563)323-7978 "Thank you for a wonderful experience and a great hunt." John had been on several hunts without even getting close to an elk or hearing a bugle. The first morning he was within 70 yards of a big six pointer bugling its head off. He heard about 100 bugles the first day and saw several bulls. Throughout the week he was into bugling elk every day, but never got a shot. guide Grant.
Deer Hunts: We had a good hunt, the 37 hunters killing 24 bucks. We killed one 30 incher, instead of our usual four, but we also killed several 28+ bucks and some other really good ones. Of course there are the usual big ones that got away, especially the 4 monster bucks we saw during elk season, two of which would have scored about 200 typical and one had a couple of big cheater points. One can only wonder where they were during deer season.
Deer Hunt #1, Sept 14-20 (arrival and leaving date of hunters) Unsettled weather, nice at first and then snowy almost blizzard conditions on the last day.
Brian Ingram, Redwood Valley, CA (707)485-7403 Killed a heavy 27" 5x5 on the first day of his hunt. Grant made a drive and pushed it out. Long shot, which seems to be Brian's usual kill method. Saw 8 bucks that day. "Great time, like always." guide Grant pic pic pic
Ed Phillips, San Jose, CA (408)243-7487 Missed a 50 yard shot at a massive 25 inch buck. Ed was used to an 8 oz set trigger and in the excitement didn't set it, so the 6 lb pull drew him off target. He also saw a heavy high 27 incher with deep forks and dark antlers, but he made the common error of looking at it first with his binocs instead of his rifle scope. I mention this, not to embarrass Ed, but to make a point. We have missed chances at lots of bucks over the years because of this same error. If it is a deer, look through your rifle scope. If he is good enough, then just slip the safety off and shoot, rather than having to lower your binocs, get your gun off your shoulder, find him in the scope, etc, etc. "Thanks Jonesy for the good time." guide Cole
Eric Cox, Chico, TX (940)644-5628 Eric & guide Tom stalked a good buck and it left just before they were in position to shoot. Passed up some other bucks looking for a good one.
Ron Geeslin, Chico, TX (940)393-2218 Saw several bucks and passed up some looking for the big one. guide Tom
Brett Ingram, Calpella, CA (707)485-7783 Killed beautiful 27" buck that would score about 180. pic pic We eased over to the edge of a cliff and looked off and the buck was standing 125 yards below us on a snowbank looking up at us. A picture perfect magazine cover buck! Brett leaned against a tree trunk and whopped him. Killed it in some incredibly steep cliffs at the top of the mountain and guide Sparky and Brett had to work it down the cliffs while brother Bruce and I took the horses 3 1/2 hours around to the bottom of the cliffs.
Bruce Ingram, Redwood Valley, CA (707)485-5176 Didn't find the buck he wanted, but gave it a good effort. He was the Ingram that killed the big buck last year, so he was polite and let his brothers kill the big ones this year. Saw several bucks and passed up some small ones. pic of Ingrams and guides. left to right Brett, Bruce, guide Sparky, Brian, guide Grant, Brett
Brad Ingram, Redwood Valley, CA (707)485-7880 Killed a heavy 28" buck in the dark timber. "Somehow with shaky hands I got the buck with one shot." pic pic pic pic guide Grant
Craig Holworthy, Lindsay, CA (559)562-6868 Passed up some good bucks looking for a whopper. guide Brian
David Slovick, Chicago, IL (773)680-5711 Killed 22" 5x5 after a mile long stalk. Packed it out in the dark with a LONG walk. about 5 miles. Beautiful night as there was a big lightning storm off in the west that we watched as we hiked down the mountain. Got to bed about midnight. pic pic guide Cole
Deer Hunt #2 Sept 20-26
Steve Boero, San Carlos, CA (650)888-0808 Killed a 24" heavy buck with a good stalk. After he started the stalk, guide Cole who was above on a cliff, spotted a 32 incher in same scrub pine patch but couldn't get Steve's attention to tell him where the bigger buck was.
Keith Poch, Shorewood, MN (952)838-7853 "The first day [Sep 21] spotted a nice 4x4 bedded in the snow 1000 yards away. While getting into the bottom of the bowl we spotted another buck at 300 yards. Decided he was good enough and took him. 27 1/2" wide with nice symmetry. Great hunt! Guide Grant is excellent and makes for good company." pic pic
David Allen, Pompano Beach, CA (954)415-1392 Killed 24" 5x5 in a high timberline basin on day 3. On the first day he had hit another bigger buck that they tracked for a long ways without success. guide Grant pic pic pic
Mike Gwinn, Given, WV (304)485-1708 Killed heavy 3x3 old buck 24 inches wide on the last day of his hunt. pic guide Tom
Pat Minnite, Vienna, WV (304)485-8000 Killed 25" "This was my first hunt outside of West Virginia and it was great. At daybreak Jason took the first shot at a nice 25" 5x4 mule deer from 110 yards on the run. A bigger deer was behind this one [guide Brian said it was 30"+] but I couldn't get off my horse quick enough to get a shot. A couple hours later I had another chance at a 25" 5x4 deer and from 140 yards I shot my first mule deer. Within 3 hours on the first morning Brian had put us on two respectable deer. What a rush! Thank you guys for everything!" pic pic
Jason Minnite, Vienna, WV (304)485-8000 From the words of Jason "The first morning of the hunt guide Brian, myself, and my brother Pat were riding our horses to the top of the mountain. We were within 100 yards of our first drainage when Brian quietly yelled "Shoot that buck!" [Jonesy's note; how do you "quietly yell"?] When I jumped off my horse I saw a good 30 inch buck that walked behind some pines. A few seconds later the buck walked out and I shot him, 6:45 AM. After I shot the 30" stepped out and walked up the kill. The buck I killed was a heavy 25 1/2 inch 3x4 [4x5 with brow tines] which was very respectable for my first mule deer. I had a wonderful time with JHO. Brian is one heck of a guide and the food was excellent. Thanks for a wonderful experience I'll never forget. Hope to see you next year." pic pic
Steve Azevedo, Vacaville, CA (916)484-3348 Killed "Lucky" a heavy 28 1/2" buck that we have been after for three years. That buck has had at least 24 shots fired at him by our hunters. Undoubtedly one of the best bucks of the season. Read Steve's complete report. guide Sparky pic pic pic
Zeph Thorning II, Hollister, CA (831)637-3686 "As usual we had an excellent time. Aaron was a great guide & worked us hard. First day we saw 20+ bucks then on the average of 12-15 per day. We passed up a few in the 27-28" range before Tres took his 31 1/2 incher. I ran out of time and as usual I am second guessing one or two of our passovers. If we draw we'll be back. We would also like to hunt with Aaron. He needs more training. -)" guide Aaron
Zeph Thorning III, Hollister, CA (916)726-5831 Passed up some good 27 inch bucks and finally killed a 31 1/2 incher 5x5 on the last day. pic pic guide Aaron
David Poske, Parkersburg, WV (304)428-5000 Missed a couple of bucks. Finally killed a 24" 5x5 on the last day. pic pic guide Tom
Ben Magnusson, Lake Stevens, WA (425)397-9885 Killed 28 1/2" heavy 5x7. Ben will argue with me about it being a 4x6 instead of a 5x7, but those brow tines are points. I don't know what else to call them. Great buck! I just called and asked Ben about the details of his kill and he said "My horse ran into it." NOT! Actually, they were riding on the spine of a ridge and guide Sparky spotted it. Ben bailed off his horse and shot twice through an opening in the trees, then pursued the wounded buck and finished it off. Ben is a great guy to have in camp, again, even if he doesn't know how to count antler points. pic
Bill Traverso, Woodinville, WA (425)485-4204 Sep 25- Oct 1 He glassed his eyeballs out but couldn't find a buck big enough to shoot. Weather was very poor for part of the hunt. guide Jonesy
HUNT #3 Sept 26-Oct 2 Stormy weather, snow & rain & mud & fog
Ken Eakins, Darlington, PA (724)658-6527 Didn't find a good buck. guide Cole
Craig McBride, Dublin, CA (925)833-2773 Had a great time but didn't find the big one like he did last year. Missed a buck. guide Sparky
Chris Degner, Oklahoma City, OK (405)478-5809 "It was another fantastic week, full of laughs, new friends, & deer. We saw about 50 bucks over the week. I was looking for one better than last year & passed on several nice bucks. Guide Sparky is the BEST. If I'm blessed to draw again I'll be back." He missed a buck.
Eddie Martinazzi, Madera, CA (559)673-0840 Saw a few bucks but didn't find the big one. guide Grant
Kirk Parrish, Madera, CA (559)994-1869 Killed a beautiful 28" buck, 6x6, at 350 yards, the farthest by 200 yards that Kirk had ever shot at anything. Great scenery where he killed the buck. "Enjoyed the hunt and the hospitality. Looking for a whopper next year." pic pic pic guide Grant & Jonesy
Gary Lawrence, Ada, MN (218)784-7331 The first day we (guide Tom, Gary, and Jonesy) had a big 30 inch buck, massive palmated tines, bedded in a patch of scrub pines at 310 yards for 7 hours. During that time the other 7 bucks got up and fed and could have been killed easily, but this buck only stood twice, turned around in his bed, and laid down again, never offering a shot. Too much brush. Someone was always watching through a spotting scope for that 7 hours. When he finally moved he went downhill through the trees, not offering a good shot. On the third day Gary killed a really nice 27" buck. pic
Matt Janes, Bakersfield, CA (661)304-0658 Killed "Clubby", a club-horned buck, in his bed in a small patch of scrub pines on a steep scree slope. "He was just unique enough to kill." Shot him in the back. He never knew what hit him. It took Jonesy 4 hours to get the horses and bring them around the bottom of the mountain and then climb it to where Matt was. pic pic bedded buck through spotting scope and patch of timber where he was bedded pic pic guide Brian & Jonesy
Brendan Preston, Bakersfield, CA (661)323-4512 Saw a good "shooter' of a buck, but the stalk went awry because of poor communication from Jonesy who was directing guide Brian and Brendan. Jonesy apologized then and apologizes again now.
HUNT # 4 Oct 2-8
Dillon Baloun, Highmore, SD (605)852-3533 Passed a 28" 5x4 at 236 yards as well as some other bucks. Saw several nice bull elk including a 7x6 a couple of 6x6 and one that would score 380. Also saw two bears one day and 5 bears another day. Saw moose mating. Had an eventful hunt. Only hunted for 3 days. guide Tom
Richard Kerri, Camino, CA (530)644-4136 "Older and wiser Rich". Killed 23 inch 4x6 "suicide buck". While getting off his horse Rich's foot slipped out of the stirrup and he fell heavily on his back, on a sharp rock. After getting back home found he had broken two ribs. While he and Sparky were sitting, letting Rich recuperate, a buck walked out of the timber and right up to them. Sparky leaned back as Rich put his rifle in front of Sparky and killed the buck at 40 yards. "The good Lord knew I couldn't hunt any more, so he sent that buck to me." guide Sparky
Rich Kerri, Livermore, CA (925)443-4408 "Young foolish Rich". Shot at a mature 4x4 at 350 yards. Killed 3x4 "opportunity buck". One evening a nice bull moose threatened to whip Jonesy on the trail. Yelling and throwing sticks at him had no effect. I couldn't find a rock to throw. I had to call for Rich to back me up with this rifle, but by the time he got there the bull decided to leave. Almost as if the moose knew I wasn't armed and Rich was. guide Sparky
John Dickenson, Long Valley, NJ (908)850-4406 Killed 22" 5x5 after a long 600 yard stalk. This buck had some serious ground shrinkage. Both John and guide Cole thought it was much larger through the spotting scope. Small body and head made the rack appear to be much larger.
George Joest, Blairstown, NJ (908)496-8100 Killed really high 5x4 with deep forks. "I had a real nice hunt with you. Beautiful country with lots of game and you run an excellent outfit. Thanks especially for the Western Hospitality." Passed up a 28" with weak forks. pic pic guide Cole
Alan Zeutschel, Greenacres, WA (509)922-3392 Got a 5x5 on the last evening of the hunt. Missed another nice buck at 186 yards. guide Grant
Randy Eastman, Spokane, WA (509)922-3657 "Kilt" a 4x4. Missed another good buck at 186 yards. Saw 4 bears & some bull elk and moose. guide Grant
Henning Behrens, Trinity Center, CA (530)266-3337 Killed a beautiful 28" 6x5 with a fantastic running snap shot just at sundown on the top of a big cliffy mountain. We spotted the buck an hour before dark and left Henning's wife, Marion, to watch it while guide Brian and I took Henning after it. It was a very difficult climb up to where we had seen the buck. We followed his tracks and then spotted his head looking at us over the ridge. He bolted and Henning just threw up his rifle and shot. We couldn't believe it when we heard the buck tumbling through the brush. Just enough light for pictures. Caped and quartered it by flashlight and down the rough steep mountain in the dark packing the meat and head. All this time Marion had been by herself in the dark a thousand yards away and had become separated from the horses so she didn't even have them for company or to watch for Sasquatch. She didn't panic at all, just waited calmly for us. One tough sweet gal. pic pic
Elk Hunts: Good weather for half the season with resulting good success, then it turned absolutely rotten, rain, snow, rain, snow, mud & crud. Horrible mud at camp. Trails were almost impassible with slick mud and deep snow partway up the mountain. Corresponding drop in success.
ELK HUNT #1 Oct 14-20 (date of hunters arriving and leaving, hunt 5 days in between)
Arnie Motta, Santa Maria, CA (805)928-1986 Arnie got a shot at a really big bull at 200 yards. Then he killed really nice 6x6 on the 4th day. Weather was rotten, as you can tell from the pictures. pic pic On the third day Arnie and John Heikkinen and John Boerschig got to watch a horse stampede as guide Brian and I participated in it. We had stopped to connoiter [you cannot reconnoiter unless you have once connoitered] and make a plan to stalk a 5-point bull we had seen. We just dropped the reins and stood by the horses as we connoitered. One horse suddenly spooked and bolted and the others figured, "Well, heck, if Bullet is running hell-bent-for-leather we might as well go too" so off they went. It was kind of a group panic sort of thing. I took off down the trail trying to cut them off and pretty soon, about the time I started to trip on my tongue, Brian thundered up behind me on Shadow, dragging Ranger behind. Shadow, being the nice horsie which he is, would not desert me, so had only gone a few yards when he realized I was not one of the group panic-ers so stopped to look for me. Ranger is loyal to Shadow, being his new understudy and replacement for Duke, so also stopped. Brain caught them and came to my rescue. We hopped on and charged down the trail. A couple hundred yards further the horses were all standing where they had been tied at lunch. They claimed they hadn't finished their nap.
John Heikkinen, Hermantown, MN (218)722-5604 Killed a spike and woke Jonesy from his first good nap of the season. Guide Brian and had I sent John and Arnie to sneak some timber late in the day. I laid down for a good nap and 10 minutes into it an earth-shattering Ka-Boom interrupted it. Brian and I quartered that elk in record time and got mostly down the mountain before dark. On the first day John missed a really big bull at 200 yards. pic
Paul Bayne, Thayne, WY (307)883-4574 Killed non-typical spike (had a drop tine) with a 260 yard shot opening morning. Paul is good at killing first thing opening day. Paul hauls my hunters from the airport to camp and back all season in exchange for an elk hunt. Paul is a good shot, and especially this year he had a reason to miss. 260 yards, offhand, breathing heavily. One shot kill, as usual. Way to go, Paul! Gibbs Wilkings, our camp jack, helped him. pic pic guide Jonesy
Steve Guttman, San Francisco, CA (415)625-0730 Was 30 seconds from killing a big six point bull, as guide Sparky called him over urgently to kill it. Steve was a couple of hundred yards from Sparky and just couldn't get there fast enough.
Will Dubrul, Belmont, CA (650)367-7667 In the dark opening morning they had bulls bugling all around, then they kind of disappeared at daylight. Will missed a bull with a muzzle-loader at 200 yards opening morning. He killed 5x5 on the third day right near where John and Paul had killed theirs two days before. pic (Will is in center until I can get a better picture of his bull) guide Sparky
John Boerschig, Katy, TX (281)391-9252 Killed 5x4 with a good 290 yard shot, dropped it on the ridge, but then it slid/skidded/rolled down the mountain and we had to go get it. pic pic Within 3 minutes after John killed his bull, Paul Bayne killed his, in almost exactly the same spot. On the way down the steep mountain John tripped on some sagebrush and did the most beautiful 2 1/2 end-over-end you ever saw. I chastised him: "Quit clowning around! We have a bull to retrieve." It was a beautiful day! John was great help at taking care of and packing the bulls, along with Gibbs Wilkins, our temporary camp jack/cook who went along for the fun of it that day.. Then the next day John went with me and two hunters, Dan Walkup and Eddie Foster, and helped guide/pack their bulls. Then the following day he went with us and helped again. I need to pay him a guide fee, I guess. Unfortunately, with all the bears we saw this year, John didn't fill his bear tag. guide Jonesy
Dale Carson, Cottage Grover, WI (608)839-5571 Missed 6x6 at 124 yards opening morning. They couldn't believe he missed, so spent two hours looking for blood, etc. No luck. Just one of those things. Never got another chance. guide Grant
Bob Carson, Madison, WI (608)241-3654 Dale's dad. Age is creeping up on him, so didn't hunt hard but had a great time. guide Grant
Dan Walkup, McIntosh, FL (352)690-3009 Killed a HUGE 6x6 with a 280 yard shot through one small hole in the timber. pic Would have scored 340 except non-symmetry made him a 330 bull. This bull died in the most difficult and unusual position I, Jonesy, have ever seen. pic We stood there for 15 minutes just trying to figure out how to take care of him. He dove down a very steep mountain and hit between two tree trunks in a V shape and his antlers jammed against the V and he slid down to the base, with his chest constricted between the trees, his front legs and shoulders sticking straight out the downhill side and his back, guts, and hams in a lump at the base of the trees. His right antler top fork was wedged on a log. pic We couldn't budge him a half inch. It took us 3 1/2 hours to quarter the hinds, pic remove the backstraps, cut his backbone in half, pull him half apart, gut him from the top (try it sometime) pic, and then pull him out from between the tree trunks pic so we could cape him and finish quartering him. It took us the rest of the day to get the horses near him and to get the pieces to the horse trail. It is a good thing Dan is in great physical shape or we might still be there eating him. Great bull, great hunt! guide Tom & Jonesy pic
Eddie Foster, Gainesville, FL (352)373-3583 Killed a big 6x6 about 15 minutes after Dan killed his bull. Long shot across a canyon. John Boerschig, who killed his bull the day before, was helping Eddie chase the bugling herd while Dan and I were after the other bunch of elk. They didn't know if the bull was hit, but went across the canyon and found him. It was a LOT of work to get him to the horse trail. The next day guide Tom helped them pack out the bulls pic , as Tom was sick the previous day. pic pic
ELK HUNT #2 Oct 20-26 rainy & snowy weather
John Stephenson, Baxter, MN (218)828-6332 Killed 2x1 bull on the first day of his hunt. pic pic He used guide Sparky's back for his rifle rest and shot the bull at 200 yards. Great shot!! I, Jonesy, had gone back for the horses as soon as we spotted the bull, knowing that John would kill it, so I didn't get to see the kill, but Sparky and John had Larry Johnson as helper..
Larry Johnson, Astoria, OR (503)325-2397 Killed 5x5 bull. pic There was a lot of sign so guide Sparky and Larry sneaked through the timber. Larry gives this report; "We soon heard cows making their mew sound and two different bulls whistling. We moved ahead to a small knoll and watched about 5 cows for a fairly long time. All at once the elk started running downhill and out of sight, but three seconds later there was a stream of cows running over our ridge about 20 yards away. There were elk running all over, some right below us. A branch bull showed up from my left and stopped between two trees about 120 yards away. I got my scope on him and fired. Down he went in a heap. Sparky and I looked at each other and both of us said 'What a great experience.' Words don't describe the excitement I felt from that hunting experience, from hearing the elk, the stalk, the amazement when there was elk everywhere, the five point bull stopping to offer me my shot. Sparky did an outstanding job on this hunt. A great guide. Thank you again!" They saw over 100 elk. [Larry killed a 7x7 bull with us a few years ago]
John Primasing, Clements, CA (209)929-1363 Killed 5x5 "Hunting was tough due to rain & snow most every day. Saw lots of deer and 2-3 moose every day." [they saw two bulls sparring, which Jonesy then called in to 100 yards]. John killed a 5x5 in some blow-down timber. "lots of work getting them out." John said he "gained weight on this trip" because of TediJeen's great cooking. guide Tom pic pic of John Primasing, Mark Simas, and Tom Backer
Mark Simas, Sacramento, CA (916)682-9288 Killed 6x6 on the third day. "I had a wonderful time and truly enjoyed being a part of your outfit. You have a first class camp and special thanks to the staff and guides." guide Brian
Tom Backer, Elk Grove, CA (209)929-1385 Killed 4x4 "Guide Tom did an excellent job in setting the hunt to my physical abilities. He has a great personality and I would recommend him to any hunter."
Bud Sandin, Lincoln, NE (402)489-2827 "Almost killed a spike". Coyotes started howling just as the elk was working his way through the trees toward Bud and the elk spooked and ran. "Grant did a very good job. We'd be glad to hunt with him again." guide Grant
Chris Sandin, Lincoln, NE (402)421-4908 Missed some shots at a five point bull at 430 yards. They had guestimated the range at 350. guide Grant
ELK HUNT #3 Oct 26-Nov 1. Rain, snow, rain, snow, mud, rain, & deep snow just a little ways up the mountain. The weather did a real number on us. First time in 20 years that most of the elk moved out to the Feedground Unit. It takes a lot of snow to push them there, and we had it. Very unusual year. Usually this last elk hunt is our best because of weather (best chance for snow) but this year it was our worst because of weather (too much rain and snow).
Don and son Tim Page, Omaha, NE (402)597-2259 Excerpts from 15 year old Tim. "This is my first elk hunt and it was very exciting at every corner. Saw a HUGE mule deer. I peeked my head over the hill and saw some cow elk and a pretty good size bull. .....never saw him again. ...we stopped and glassed and saw 8 elk and 1 spike move out about 500 yards away and we went after them and never saw them again. We went to Jonesy's honey hole and saw two cows. We climbed the ridge and saw four more cows. Went up a steep hill with a lot of snow and spooked up a lot of cows but didn't see any bulls." Tim didn't tell about the incredible fall he took, end over end down a steep muddy slope. The weather was a real problem. Tim and I, Jonesy, climbed a steep mountain in hip-deep snow, found the elk, but didn't get a shot. Dad Don and guide Sparky were watching from below and saw the big bull go out ahead of us. From Dad Don; "Tim and I have seen more game than we could have imagined-- huge muleys, moose, over 100 elk, cat sign, all in a hunt marred by heavy snow and rain. Sparky has been great, showing extensive local knowledge and extreme patience dealing with a couple of flatlanders. We had a great time, Jonesy, and Tim and I look forward to the next trip. I was pretty proud of how hard Tim worked and put the old man to shame."
Lauren Lopez, Elm Grove, WI (262)821-5144 Killed a 3x3 bull. He and guide Brian sat quietly as the bull and some cows fed toward them to 90 yards, where Lauren killed him.
Charlie Sisson, New Berlin, WI (414)427-4693 Didn't find the bull he wanted. Although he hunted hard, he only saw one cow elk the whole hunt. Just in the wrong place at the right time. guides Tom/Brian
Stephen Lopez, Lafayette, CA (925)283-7097 Stephen's airline misplaced his rifle, so he borrowed my trusty Husqvarna 243 the first day. Fortunately/unfortunately Stephen and guide Brian had a 300 yard shot at a bull, but Stephen, being unfamiliar with the rifle and not having a great deal of confidence in this pipsqueak caliber, declined the shot and tried to get closer. They "almost" made it. Stephen fell off, or got dumped off horses four times in one day. His horse kept trying to roll in the snow with Stephen on him.
Carl Absher, Harrison, TN (423)961-2265 On his first elk hunt. "I appreciated Grant's efforts. I feel like he worked harder and was far more frustrated with the weather than I was. Even though I did not get a shot I am still in awe of Wyoming's fantastic scenery and its entertaining wildlife. This was a hunt that proves that it is not necessary to kill anything to have an enjoyable and successful hunt." Carl's complete report is interesting to read as it is a day-by-day of what goes on with a hunt, from the perspective of a first time elk hunter. One afternoon Carl and I hunkered in an honest-to-gosh blizzard for an hour. Guide Grant and John Toalson were caught by it on top of a mountain.
John Toalson, Waianae, HI (808)695-9258 On the first hunt of his life. Not just elk hunting, but any hunting. "I'm disappointed I never got a shot opportunity, but I still had a great time. The weather really whipped us, but Grant, Brian, and Jonesy did the best they could and were as frustrated as we were.
