Bull elk in the fall

ELK HUNTS

Trophy elkJackson Hole Outfitters offers both archery and rifle elk hunting on the Greys River. The Greys River country offers an outstanding opportunity to harvest an elk. We hunt two resident herds of elk — the Greys River feed ground herd and the Forest Park feed ground herd. Because these elk are at or above the Wyoming Game & Fish objectives there is a possibility of purchasing an additional cow tag, allowing you to hunt two elk on the same trip. We are out of the wolf recovery zone so they have not had an impact on our elk herds, and because they are both resident herds we do not have to wait for them to migrate into the area. We always have plenty of elk to hunt.

Jackson Hole Outfitters offers a fully guided Archery Elk Hunt. This hunt runs from September 7th through September 30th right during the rut. There just isn’t anything more exciting than the sound of bugling elk. This hunt is fully guided with one guide per two hunters. We start the hunt after an early morning breakfast when you leave on horseback with an experienced archery hunting guide to assist you in getting that trophy elk. You and your guide will spend the day calling for that big bull, trying to get him to come within archery range. That’s when it gets exciting! When an animal that big gets that close to you, it’s pretty impressive and your heart is going to speed up no matter how hard you try to stay calm. You have already had a great day and you haven’t even released an arrow yet! This is a great hunt because Jackson Hole Outfitters offers a very comfortable camp with great meals. We have an experienced and safe staff of guides. There are plenty of elk and the scenery can’t be beat. We don’t have to travel as far or climb as much in elevation for our elk hunts as we do for those big mule deer, so the hunts are less strenuous but you still need to prepare.

Jackson Hole Outfitters also offers a fully guided Rifle Elk Hunt. This hunt runs from October 15th and ends October 31st. This is also a fully guided hunt with one guide per two hunters. This time of the year is cooler and we usually get a little snow on the ground, perfect for hunting elk after the rut. This hunt is after the mule deer season so the guides have been able to do plenty of scouting and the horses are in top condition for riding and packing your trophy elk back to camp. Like the archery hunt we start the day after an early morning breakfast then hit the trail on horses your guide has picked out for you. The elk are usually done bugling this time of the year so we do more glassing and stalking to close the gap on these big bulls. Sneaking up on a herd of 15 or more elk can be pretty tricky but our experienced guides at Jackson Hole Outfitters are up for the fun and challenge. We will try to get you within 300 to 400 yards — maybe closer depending on the terrain.

Because the season closes earlier at the Jackson Hole Outfitters Camp we do our Rifle Elk Hunts from the very comfortable Box Y Lodge just 15 miles further up the river. This time of the year we also have a greater chance of snow and cold so the heated cabins of the Box Y Lodge with their private baths allow you to be more comfortable in inclement weather. Go to www.boxylodge.com for more information on the lodge.

If you do your part and we do our part the odds of being successful become a lot better. We can guarantee that it will be an adventure and a good time. Join Jackson Hole Outfitters for a great adventure on the Greys River.
