1994 SUCCESS REPORT AND  REFERENCE LIST

Jackson Hole Outfitters

 email

In keeping with my policy of a complete reference list of all hunters who hunt with me each year, listed below (in
order of their arrival at camp) are the 1994 hunters, along with a brief report on their success. This will enable
you, the prospective hunter, to get a feel for how the hunt went, and you can call unsuccessful hunters as well as
those who killed the big ones. The number before some names indicates repeat hunters and how many years
this hunter has hunted with me.
ANTELOPE: A good hunt. More of you should apply for a permit. Always 100% shooting, some big bucks on
  private land. Call for details.
ARCHERY ELK; prime time for bugling bulls, beautiful scenery, lots of excitement.
Ron Packard, Fremont, Ca (510)797-7507. On a five day hunt he was into bugling bulls every day, and every
hour of some days. He missed a 6X6 bull at 40 yards, shooting two inches under its chest, missed a spike at 45
yards, and missed a 55 yard shot at a big 6X6. Had five bulls within 60 yards at different times.
MULE DEER: We saw lots of big bucks, many of them exceptional trophies. Yes, the big boys are still there if
you know where to look. Weather was very hot and dry the first two weeks, then rain, snow, and fog the next
week severely hampered the success. A light kill, but that makes it better for next year.
2 Larry Jost, Wessington Springs, SD (605)539-9639; Larry killed a nice 25 inch buck on opening day.
Bob and Floryce Silva, Sonoma, Ca (707)939-1040 and Bob Jr., Petaluma, Ca; For the second year in a row the
Silvas had a drop camp. Killed two nice bucks. I don't always offer drop camps, but if you are a good
do-it-yourself hunter it is an option.
8 John Scott, Pacifica, Ca (415)355-0195: John is still pursuing the mythical 30 inch buck. Opening day he shot
at a great trophy buck, perhaps 30 inches, but missed as it was a long shot (350 yards) and the buck was
moving. John also passed up a 28 inch buck. The last hour of the last day, John's horse fell with him. Luckily he
landed on the granite boulder with his head, the hardest thing John has. He acquired a huge knot, a severe
abrasion, a concussion, and a major headache. One of my major goals in life is to help John get that 30 incher.
Don Block, Roseburg, Or (503)440-4849: Saw four 30 inch bucks. Shot at three different trophy bucks, 28 or 29
inches. One had incredibly heavy beams. Don missed them all to the right, so checked his gun and found the
scope was off. He had a trophy buck at fifty yards for several minutes, but we couldn't tell how wide it was. The
wind shifted and the buck left before we could adequately appraise his headgear.
4 Bob Mills, Tracy, Ca (209)836-2858; Another of my great goals in life is to help Bob kill a 30 incher and to get
a kiss from his beautiful wife, and not necessarily in that order. Bob saw 32 bucks on his hunt, including a
whopper 30+ incher at 50 yards in the timber. Just couldn't get a shot.
2 Ray Hansen, Spearfish, SD (605)642-5295; On his first day of hunting, Ray made an incredible shot on a
heavy high 26 inch buck which was bedded in a timberline basin. He had to shoot between another bedded
buck's antlers to kill this great trophy buck, then the other nice buck (and four smaller ones) trotted past us
while we took video film. Ray killed a big 29 inch buck with me in 1991.
Keith Wherry, Cherryville, NC (704)482-0687; Killed a real nice 26 inch buck, heavy horned trophy. Saw
several other bucks, including a big white-horned one.
Scott Kane, Gillette, Wy (209)599-7222 Scott is one of the nicest guys I have had the privilege of hunting with.
He shot at a big buck with a drop horn. Running shot at 150 yards. Missed. Passed up a nice 25 inch buck.
Jose Quintero (818)361-2520 and Tim Avalos (818)365-6200 San Fernando, Ca.: Unguided. They saw a few
deer but didn't really do well.
2 Dennis Rush, Oakley, Ca (510)625-4099 and Tom Silva, San Pablo, Ca (510)724-8680; Unguided. They saw
some bucks, but not the one they wanted. I do not recommend unguided hunts, as they are seldom productive.
7 Jim and Lee Windham, Lakeworth, Fl (407)798-2708 and Brad and Tina Scherer, West Palm Beach, Fl
(407)793-8136; Jim says he's never coming the first week of October again. For the past two years he has really
been weathered out. Rain, Snow, and Fog literally dampened the hunt. In spite of that, Jim shot at a 34 inch
buck, and Jim and Brad saw several other really big ones. Brad was duly impressed with our mule deer, and
says he is coming back again to try once more for the big one.
George Perata, George's A-1 Firewood, San Mateo, Ca (415)572-8485; George hunted hard, seeing several
deer, but not the big buck he wanted. The weather was really rotten the week of his hunt, with lots of rain, snow,
and fog. Tough hunting conditions. Couldn't get to the areas we wanted to hunt.
Greg Swezey, Brewster, WA (509)689-3769; Greg and his guide, Aaron, hunted real hard in lousy weather
conditions. He shot at and missed a good 30 inch buck as well as a nice 24 inch buck. He saw a tremendous
trophy buck with black antlers, but couldn't get close enough for a shot. On the last day of the season the fog
lifted and it was a great day of hunting, seeing 25 deer and killing a nice heavy and high buck.
Bill Shandel, Comptche, Ca (707)937-5400; Bill was on a drop camp hunt and mostly sat in his tent for a week
watching the snow, rain, and fog.
ELK HUNT; Generally lousy weather for most of the hunt, but the snow made finding them easier. 12 of 13 elk
hunters shot at elk, and 10 of them shot at six point bulls. Our elk herd is in great shape, and we averaged
seeing forty or fifty elk each day on the guided hunts. Everyone had action.
2 Jim Lydic, Zanesville, Oh (614)697-7035 Jim sat on our best stand opening day and was finally rewarded in
mid-afternoon when a big 6X6 bull came by. His 250 yard shot anchored the good looking bull elk. He and his
wife, Pat, bowhunted with me a few years ago and he is looking forward to another hunt.
David Brown, Hamilton, Oh (513)867-8508; David shot at three bulls on his hunt, including two 6X6. He saw a
  lot of elk.
Paul Jansen, Wyoming, Mn (612)434-3569; Saw a lot of elk including several bulls. Did not get a shot at a bull,
but finally killed a meat cow.
Carl Hansen, St. Francis, Mn (612)753-4112; Carl saw a lot of elk, shot at a 6X6 but missed, and finally settled
for a cow elk for meat.
Gary Krueth, Ramsey, Mn (612)421-9131; Gary saw a lot of elk and finally made an absolutely great LONG
shot, killing a massive 6X6 trophy bull elk. One of the best bulls we have killed.
John Keebler, Mobile, Al (205)343-9633; Saw a bunch of elk each day, passed up some small bulls, hit a huge
6X6 herd bull, tracked it for two days, but didn't catch up to it. Superficial wound. He saw several big bulls on
  his hunt.
Jim Krieger, Baltimore, Md (410)335-7228; Opening day Jim could have shot a 6X5 bull, but let Stuart
Greenberg take it. Jim saw a number of elk, including some bulls, but he was always in the wrong place at the
wrong time and didn't get a shot.
Stuart Greenberg, Greenbrae, Ca (415)461-1718; Stuart killed a 6X5 bull elk on opening day in a snowstorm.
Stuart never did get to see our beautiful mountains, as it was always foggy and raining or snowing during his
  four day stay.
2 Dan Groves, Bakersfield, Ca (805)871-7643; Dan shot a big 5X5 bull on his second day with a 400 yard heart
shot. Dan waited a long time for this bull. In 1988 he broke his hand on a hunt with me by a fall off a horse and I
gave him a free hunt. He finally came on the hunt and got his bull.
Juan Gonzales, Fremont, Ca (510)792-1530; Juan saw more than 60 elk on opening day, and shot a beautiful
6X5 bull with a long shot across a canyon. He and his son, Rick, fired a bunch of shots with their semi-auto
.30-06 rifles to put the bull down. Sounded like a war!
Rick Gonzales, Angels Camp, Ca (209)785-4596; Rick helped his dad shoot at that big 6 point bull on opening
day, then spent the rest of the week chasing elk trying to get his. Although he saw a lot of elk, he did not get
  one.
Joe Swicegood, Sr. Clayton, Ca (510)672-4813; Joe shot at a 6X6 bull on opening day as it ran through the
trees, missed, and was glad he had missed as it wasn't as big as he wanted. He saw 40 or 50 elk per day, passed
up several bulls, but did not get the big one he came after.
Joe Swicegood, Jr., Healdsburg, Ca (707)433-3820; Joe killed a dandy 6X5 bull on the fifth day of his hunt. He
had passed up several bulls previously, looking for the big one. Joe and his dad saw a lot of elk on their hunt,
and also saw some big bucks. They are coming back next year for the mule deer hunt to try and get that 36 inch
  monster mule deer they saw.
Jeff Contini, Stillwell, Ks (913)681-7713, and Bruce Contini, Chino Hills, Ca (909)597-1077; Unguided hunt.
They didn't do well. Unguided hunts are tough when you don't know the trails, don't know the horses, and don't
know where the elk hole up. I don't recommmend unguided hunt.
John Boerschig, Katy, Tx (713)391-9252; John saw a number of elk on his three day hunt, but did not see the
  one he was after.
IDAHO ELK HUNT. Although severe weather dampened the hunt, we saw a lot of elk. A great hunt in a rugged
  remote area.
Keith Perkins, Mesa, Az (602)917-3618; Keith shot a four point bull with a great running shot at 200 yards.
Ron Perkins, Mesa, Az (602)917-3618; When I'm more than 60 years old, if I am in anywhere near as good of
physical shape as Ron, I'll probably still be climbing mountains pursuing the wiley wapiti. Ron shot at a bull at
300 yards, another at 350 yards, and passed up spikes at 20 yards. He and Kay stalked a huge 6 point bull in
knee deep snow across a huge canyon but didn't get it. He saw more than 50 elk each day.
Kay Perkins, Showlow, Az (602) ; Kay passed up a bunch of elk, stalked a big bull, and saw two monster six
  pointers. Saw lots of elk.
Lewis Brown, Anderson, SC (803)226-2764; Lewis saw a lot of elk, shot at and missed a couple of spikes, but
  didn't get the big one.
Mike Harris, Court Conyers, Ga (404)483-6219; Mike had a hard time getting around and didn't see a lot of
  elk. Went home early.
Jim Albrecht, Union, Wa (206)898-2663; Jim saw some elk but didn't see a bull within range.
Jim Cook, Grand Island, Ne (308)381-8916; Jim saw some elk but didn't get a shot.

ARIZONA COUES DEER HUNT; The hunt hasn't taken place as of the printing date for this Success Report,
  so call the guys.
  Toney Daly, Huntsville, Al (205)534-7043;
  Frank Rekuski, Roseville, Mn (612)482-8881;
